Cinco de Mayo

Sometimes you have one of those perfectly perfect days. They just happen right when you are least expecting it. Wouldn't you know it, today one of those perfectly perfect days just snuck right up and grabbed me.

Today the sun was shining, the sky was a million miles of blue with just the right sprinkling of clouds. The neighbor kid came to cut our lawn and the fresh smell of sheared grass and gasoline drifted in through the open windows and filled up the whole house. The grass was very green, thanks to prodigious rain, and the trees were all blooming. (I particularly enjoy the pink trees with little fluffy flowers. Carly and I decided that they are Princess trees, for Princesses.) Out back there was popcorn popping on our fruit trees and delicate baby leaves sprouting along the grape vines.

After Josh scooter-ed home from school, I forced the children outside to play. My door got a good workout from the ins and outs. I had to threaten naps and chores to keep the little imps outside. The ice cream truck sang its way down the street and Josh came inside, apple colored cheeks aglow, to beg a treat. Five dollars in hand, he ran.

Just as the sun was starting to droop we took a walk through the neighborhood, pausing to play at the park. Dare-devil Carly always wanted to be pushed higher, legs moving in time with the ebb and flow of the swing. Josh, on his own swing, laughed hysterically as the dog dodged between his pumping legs. A game of tag graced the last leg of the trip and I think Joshua is still "it" (but it might be me). We gathered at the fire pit as the sun slipped down into sleep, roasting marshmallows and singing the Campfire Song Song loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

Now the house is quiet, my clothes smell like smoke, and its one hour into the fifth of May. Not every moment today was perfect. There was the usual frustration and worry, distraction and over indulgence. There was cleaning dirty bathrooms and making lunch only to remember it was a field trip day. There was laughter too, kisses and hugs. There were smiles and frowns, ups and downs. The good moments gloss over the bad and smooth out the edges.

Perfectly, unexpectedly perfect.

The office is my little craft room. Eric also has an office, it used to be his Dad's room. I never use my office, it is too closed off from the rest of the house and when I try to go inside there is chaos outside as a result. And yelling, which is like nails on a chalkboard. The office that needs to be packed is my small office that I never use, it is mostly functioning as storage for all my craft junk.
